The older I get, the less I find myself wanting to talk about Intellectual Things. Maybe this is how we all <s>die</s> get set in our ways. XD I want to talk about frivolous stuff and have a laugh! Lol well I guess I always have, lol, but now even more than before. Must be cos I've actually had to do work and start really thinking about my PhD (had a huge breakthrough today - I keep forgetting about it, then remembering and having this big rush of relief!). Problem is there's no-one around anymore who shares my frivolous interests. ;_; *clings to internetz* XD Never leave meeeeee~!!

Oh yeah, meme too:

THE MEME OF SHARING

Day one: a song
Day two: a picture
Day three: a book/ebook/fanfic
Day four: a site
Day five: a youtube clip
Day six: a quote
Day seven: whatever tickles your fancy

I always enjoy There, I Fixed It, a photo site collecting 'Epic Kludges and Jury Rigs', lol. This is my favourite recent entry.
Oh man I hate lazy inaccuracies, especially from people who should know better. XD Like, King Knut was not trying to hold back the waves, the whole point was that he was demonstrating that he couldn't! I feel like a university professor should know this, even if he is a linguistics professor, lol. Plus in the same lecture he gave the impression that Ypres was given the nickname 'Wipers' because of some colonial-type Anglicisation, but I'm fairly certain all the top brass would know the real pronunciation full well, and it was more likely the ordinary Tommies in the trenches who didn't know a word of French who'd come up with that one. But that's just my own assumption (which I love making, in historical contexts XD).

Life continues to be busy. @_@ But that's OK. I packed up all my unnecessary clothes today in preparation for moving. On Friday I go cat-sitting in the Peak District, which will be fun but add a lot more commuting into my life, lol. Tomorrow I have to see my supervisor and then I'm meeting one of my students who says she's finding classes a bit hard, bless. I hope I can help her. :X

I don't like this grey weather. I keep having these awful little D: D: D: periods. Maybe I should write about them sometime, because I feel like my experience of depression is really different to everyone else's. Lol I always want to make sure things are represented accurately, haha. Plus it'd be nice to meet some people who understand. I keep thinking I should go to some uni meetings (like about environmental issues, postgrad groups, mental health...) but I already feel so busy, I need my flopping time, lol. Once I get in at night I don't want to go out again. ^^'

I've been wondering what to do for the next thing on this meme:

THE MEME OF SHARING

Day one: a song
Day two: a picture
Day three: a book/ebook/fanfic
Day four: a site
Day five: a youtube clip
Day six: a quote
Day seven: whatever tickles your fancy

I wanted to rec a fanfic, but I just didn't want to favour one when I know so many great authors - plus, chances are everyone's already read everything. ^^' But I also don't read many fiction books anymore (that's what academia will do for you, lol, plus I'm *extremely* picky). I do, however, enjoy history and biography, and a few years ago I read this excellent biography of Oscar Wilde. Oscar Wilde is someone whose legend I find more interesting than his work, but I get really involved in a tragic life story like his. Also explains my recent fascination with Michael Jackson. (Quite looking forward to This Is It, I have to say. :3)

I want choc. But I don't have any, and I shouldn't go get it. XD I'm gonna have some tea and a chocolate-coated rice cake instead. :9

How do half a dozen finger sandwiches and a scone make you incapable of eating anything else for the entire day?! It's inexplicable really, haha.

Also!! Finally put the rusty, grinding wheels in motion for the purchase of my house. @_@ I have given the command to transfer huge sums of money to my solicitor, haha. Hopefully we should be able to start moving after the 5th of November. ...Is the last I heard, so... fingers crossed, eh? Longest house sale process in the history of the world! XD

This doesn't apply to you guys of course, but I tell you something that annoys me: the general tendency of Americans on the internet to assume everyone knows and cares about American pop culture, and that if they personally haven't heard of it it's obviously way too crappy and provincial to be noteworthy. :| (Yes, this is of course inspired by reading comments on ONTD regarding Stephen Gately's untimely death.) Why bother commenting just to say "I have no idea who this is"?! Even if you then tack on an "RIP"? Ugh. I know I waste a lot of time on the internet, but at least I don't barge into forums and threads just to be an arse.
I'm pretty sure Firefox on my laptop has a memory leak. After being in use all day, it has phenomenally high memory use - I'm talking 7 figures! (That makes it a GB, right?) This of course leads to more and more lag, till eventually Firefox just freezes and my whole system becomes unresponsive, even after I close Firefox (I also get the problem where Firefox gives me the 'still running' message after I've closed it and try to start it again. And also the 'This is embarrassing' message when it restarts and is 'having difficulty restoring my tabs').

Now I've looked at some stuff that purports to fix this, but it all involves about:config and messing with stuff that a) seems complicated and b) just assumes you know what to do and can remember it all and just do it la-la-la ("start Firefox in safe mode so you can see what the buggy add-on is!" BUT HOW CAN I TELL?! Does it say "This one is the buggy one" next to it?!). I really don't want to break it. XD I don't know what could be causing it, cos I don't have any new addons, just the ones I've been using for ages, and this is a new problem. ...Unless... has anyone else noticed a similar problem since installing Echofon?

Basically, has anyone else had a similar problem at all, and if so, how did you fix it? Easy steps please. XD

If me and davechan have a song, this might be it - not cos we're outlaws or anything, lol, but I have a memory of walking down the street singing it together at like 6am in bright sunshine after we'd stayed up all night talking about jam-making with nichadaemus. These are my university memories!

5. You Never Can Tell - Chuck Berry. I can't remember if I knew this song before I saw Pulp Fiction or not, but I wish I had.

And a bonus to wreck all that cred: Yes Sir, I Can Boogie - Baccara. And another to take me back to high school: You Don't Know Me - Armand van Helden.

That became easier once I remembered a lot of songs that begin with "you". ;) I could've gone for a few more oldies too in the end!

Another meme down, several more to do... lol.

>.> OK so everyone who cares will have seen this already. But it looks a lot more awesome than I was expecting. <.<

<lj-embed id="36" />

He looks like a skeleton with clothes on, yes, but he looks way more with it than he did at, say, the 30th anniversary show.

I haven't been tagged for this meme but I wanted to do it anyway. XD

List seven habits/quirks/facts about yourself.
→ Tag seven people to do the same.
→ Do not tag the person who tagged you or say that you tag "whoever wants to do it."

1. I'm not a confrontational person (anymore XD), but if I have an opinion, it is actually pathologically impossible for me to keep it to myself. If I'm not saying anything about something, it's because I don't have an opinion. I have got better about *how* I say things though, haha, and on the internet I'm better at keeping my mouth shut (cos it just leads to way more frustration than talking face to face, haha).

2. I am really prone to electric shocks. I have to shut car doors by touching the glass - I almost always get shocks if I touch the actual door part. I always touch a door handle of stair handrail with my knuckles first, cos it hurts less if you get a shock there.

3. I am the least perfectionist Virgo I have ever met. "Good enough" is my motto.

4. I'm a "mirror person" in some ways. Like, I'm not a people person or especially chatty, but if I'm with someone who talks a lot, I will talk a lot too. (In groups, I'm usually the person who talks the second most, behind the person who talks a lot. XD) If I'm with someone funny, I try and match them and be funny too. Emphasis on the 'try'. XD

5. I hate coffee, but I love coffee cake, coffee chocolates, mocha, caramel macchiatos and the smell of coffee. But coffee itself just tastes watery and bitter to me, even if it's made with milk. It makes me sad. :/

6. I'm a slasher born not made. I thought I was the only one in the world when I realised I liked the gay aged around 14. But then when I was 19, my eyes were opened. :D

7. I almost never wear black. I love colour. I don't even wear black to funerals, cos I don't own any all-black clothes. I guess this is why K8 appeal to me so much... Lol. I love spotting pairings in the shops, haha. (Like these bikinis and this hideous jacket lol.)

And here's another meme I did volunteer myself for. XD

Comment on this post. I will choose seven interests from your profile and you will explain what they mean and why you are interested in them. Post this along with your answers in your own journal so that others can play along.

giving_ground gave me:

1. Ghostbeard. This is from Most Haunted, in the classic days when Derek Acorah used to be the medium on it (before they exposed him as a fraud lol). They were once investigating somewhere and he said he felt as if he had a 'lot of facial hair' as he was sensing some kind of hirsute spirit - so I christened it the ghostbeard. Most Haunted isn't nearly as much fun without Derek, even if he is a charlatan. He's a great showman and that's what it's all about, after all!

2. The 20s. I LOVE the Jazz Age. The carefreeness of the post-WWI period led to wonderful extravagant art and fashion and music, and I adore it. I love art nouveau and art deco, and hot jazz is some of my favourite music in the world - it's just got so much energy and such pace and rough-round-the-edges chaos. I also love 20s pop music - the not-quite jazz stuff, but the dance band music such as anything on this album. There's a sense of freedom and celebration and daring in a lot of art from that time, such as the song There Ain't no Sweet Man That's Worth the Salt of my Tears - the version I have is sung by, of all people, Bing Crosby. And that's without even touching on some of the *filth* present in hot jazz tunes lol. It's just interesting to look back at a time when people could cut loose, before the austerity of the 30s and the devastation of the Second World War.

3. Falsifying statistics. This, like so many things, was the brainchild of disography, who decided we should all add this to our LJ profiles in an attempt to depose the very boring 'music' as LJ's most common interest. LJ shows currently nearly 300 adherents!

4. Passionate male friendship. Ah yes. Today I believe the term is 'bromance', haha, but it's the same concept. Two (or more!) guys who aren't necessarily romantically involved together, but who just wouldn't be right with anyone else (and may well have very slashy under/overtones). The classic anime example was Get Backers. I just love that dynamic, guys who care about each other and have fun together - it's the basis of all slash, in my mind.

5. The humble turkey. Haha this one is from my high school days! I had a couple of friends who loved stuff like Vic & Bob and Harry Hill, and they used to make up nonsense phrases, usually in Spanish, and that's how this one came about. But 'the humble turkey' sounds even funnier than 'pavo humilde'. XD Other classics of the time include 'ape and man', 'aceitunas agrias' (sour olives) and 'trucha de arco iris' (rainbow trout). Yeah, I've always run with a similar crowd. XD

6. Yomping. This is one of ninjaiguana's. It just sounds cool and very... strident. XD

7. Morris dancing. Despite my rather dim view of folk music in the way we've come to understand it, I actually quite enjoy folk traditions and I've seen some very skilled morris dancers! The best ones I ever saw were in Ulverston, they had iron bars and performed some very intricate moves while having a laugh as if they thought they weren't going to make it, it was very entertaining. Plus I enjoy the sound of the accordian (when used in the right way, lol).

Lol I still have a bunch of memes to complete, but I'll wait and make a new entry... sometime. ^^'

The answer is simple: ignore the public! Even leaving aside the fact that many people are just wilfully ignorant (cf, panic-buying of old-fashioned lightbulbs before they phase them out, what the hell), we have scientific experts to tell us that actually, objectively this is the best thing we should be doing. So why doesn't the government just do it? The point of the government is to do what's best for people when they can't do it themselves, surely, and this is a prime example. In other words: listen to the people who do know what they're talking about. This is an issue parties should be united about, so it's not even a case of losing voters.

One thing that's been getting my goat lately too is packaging. When I go to the supermarket, why can I buy loose broccoli *and* broccoli that's been shrinkwrapped? (Not to mention the organic broccoli, and the broccoli grown locally.) Why does the broccoli need shrinkwrap? If every supermarket in the world, tomorrow, stopped shrinkwrapping their broccoli and putting their apples and carrots in plastic bags, and instead started putting out paper bags instead of plastic ones so people could help themselves to loose fruit and veg, we'd have years and years more oil! It's not even difficult. It'd be cheaper for the supermarkets and for us, because buying loose is always cheaper than buying the pre-packed option.

Just something for you all to consider next time you go do your shopping~~ And don't forget to take your own carrier bags! ;)

Back from the conference in Newcastle I was at for the past 3 days! I didn't get to see much of Newcastle but what I saw seemed very nice. And I got to go to the seaside and I walked on the beach and went to the aquarium! And the hostel I stayed in was very nice. I'll have to go back another time and see it properly. :) Oo and I need to claim my money back off the uni, haha.

I just can't decide what to do for my birthday during the day. Should I go to the monkey park, or the spa, or the butterfly house, or Creswell Crags, or Chatsworth, or for afternoon tea at Pollard's or the more upmarket St Paul's... or should I just stay in and watch Michael Jackson vids on YouTube? XD It'll depend on the weather, I guess. September is such a temperamental time to have a birthday... sometimes you get bright sun, sometimes you have a downpour (though mainly it's just grey XD).

Booked the restaurant though, and when they asked if it was a special occasion I said it was my birthday... so I don't know what'll happen. I probably won't even take my computer. And once again I wish I had a netbook... >.>

Maybe we should wait till 22/8? XD And before that, there's this 'event' on 19/8... I'm so curious about that! And then there's the 5 year anniversary too... Seriously, so much at once! Pace yourselves, Johnnys! XD

I think I had a dream where K8 and Uchi were doing something together, except by the end of the dream I wasn't sure if they were putting him back in the band or if they all just happened to be on the same stage. I remember a weird fluffy yellow costume that I think Uchi was wearing. XD

Saw some super-adorable scans from this month's mags up at XQ. Subaru's turtle impression is adorable. Dimple! XD

    <lj:music>Michael Jackson - History</lj:music>

A sad tale, of a love that was not meant to be...

I was so happy when I saw them in the shop: OTP mugs! Perfect for my new home. I carefully left them dormant for weeks, still swathed in bubble wrap and tissue paper to avoid knocks and accidental damage.

Finally, yesterday, I let them out of the wrapping for the first time.

They seemed so happy together! A pint of tea for me, a pint of rooibos for davechan.

Yasumug was so content, full of delicious hot liquid.

But while drinking from Barumug, davechan had noticed a problem. His handle was not attached properly. The glaze was cracking around the joins, indicating it was somehow slipping down the side. First time of use, and already defective!

How apt, for a Subaru mug. "A bit cracked, and not safe", said nira_chan.

I wrapped poor Barumug back in the bubble wrap he had so recently shed, took him back to the shop and explained his condition. They happily agreed to replace him - they'd sold lots, they said, and this had never happened before - but, tragically, there were no more Barumugs left in the shop. Nor were there Marumugs, or Uchimugs. Only Hinamugs and Kuramugs, and as I was categorically not going to have Ohyass mugs I chose a Hinamug.

He appears to be in rude health and perfectly fit for the job.

Not sure how Yasumug feels about this though.

We'll see how it goes...

I actually feel quite sad I couldn't get another Barumug! XD I'll have to see if they have a website or another stockist nearby, haha. Then I'll need a Marumug to keep Hinamug happy. ;) Good thing you can never have too many mugs!

Oh and while I'm on NEW DVD NEW SINGLE YAAAAAAY I was worried there wasn't going to be a DVD after all, when they announced the single, haha, but I'm so relieved, they came through for us! Apparently it was an awesome show too, so it's mega-exciting! Haha, it's weird to think that the last two DVD-material releases they've done (I'm counting last year's unit songs, lol) I've seen live... so this DVD is sort of extra-important to me, cos I didn't get to go. :< Well, I guess at least I made a good call with my Japan trip last year, haha. And maybe next year I'll get a chance to pay a visit again. A new release is always so exciting cos of the bonuses too! Backstage stuff is always so... fulfilling~. Eeeeee I'm betting on a December release again, haha. ...Except let's not think of the uni things I'll have to have done by then, lol.

[Edit] With trepidation:

The "You Should Write..." Meme!
my thread here

The way Michael Jackson couldn't hit the "thrill" part of "Thriller" reminds me of how Subaru always misses the "ke" of "wakete" in Heavenly Psycho. Aww. XD

Wish this lump in my throat would go away. :( ...Listening to the FFF version of Heavenly Psycho totally did not help. x_o

...And I have to finish my remix too.
